On September 1, 2006, Zhang Mengye, a senior Falun Gong member was hit by a car on his way to practice site in Bangkok, Thailand. After three days rescue, Zhang died at 20:00 of September 4, 2006.

Zhang Mengye, more than 60 years old, started to practice Falun Gong in 1994. On November 11, 2005, he escaped to Thailand with his wife. Because he was a former classmate of Chinese President Hu Jintao and once a professor in the mainland, Li Hongzhi called the Thailand Falun Gong organization to take care of Zhang especially. Zhang occupied important opposition as soon as he arrived in Thailand. In June 2006, Zhang once had an opportunity to New Zealand, but U.S.-based Falun Gong Headquarters conveyed Li Hongzhi's message that they all wished Zhang to go to America and to do more for Falun Gong using his identify and seniority, then Zhang gave up his opportunity to New Zealand and waited for arrangement by the Friend of Falun Gong.

As soon as the traffic accident occurred, the leader of Falun Gong in Thailand Zhong Yijiang told the Headquarters in U.S. at once. According to the secretive attitude of the Headquarters, Thailand Falun Gong organization covered up the death of Zhang for a long time to avoid negative influence.
